She’s a woman, singer, songwriter and actress. She was born in 1915 in Paris and she died at the age of 47 years.
From her childhood to her death, her life was unhappy, very hard and complicated because her mother abandoned her at birth. When she was 14 years, she began singing in the streets, cabarets and suburbs of Paris. At 17 she had her only daughter, who died two years after. Her name was Marcelle.
While she was on a tour in United States, in New York she lived the biggest love story of her life with a French boxer, who died in an accident. The song “Hymme a L’Amour” is in his memory.
She married twice and she had many lovers.
But, in the following years and thanks to her willpower she was presented as a great singer in the Mouline Rouge, later at the Olympia in Paris with great success in both.
She debuted in the genre music-hall and soon became a star of French music.
In the fifties she was famous in many countries.
Because of her helpless appearance and her powerful voice, her friends as Charles Aznavour, Georges Moustaki, Yves Montand called her: “sparrow”.
She was a woman of extraordinary personality. Her image is associated with her black dress that made her easily identifiable.
Her songs are known by all: “La Vie en Rose” written by her, “Milord”, “Sous le ciel de Paris·, “Non, je ne regretted rien”.
